MEDDIC Sales Framework: Qualify Deals That Are Real

Framework Pillar

MEDDIC: The Framework
That Tells You If The
Deal Is Real

MEDDIC forces you to find the facts that matter before you commit a quarter to a deal that was never going to close. Six checkpoints, no guesswork, no false hope on the forecast.

MEDDIC qualification system: Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, Champion

The Six Checkpoints

Every letter is a question you need a real answer to, not a box to check.

M

Metrics

The quantified business impact your solution drives. Ask: what number changes, and how does the buyer measure it today.

Red flag: the buyer can only describe value in vague terms like efficiency or productivity.

E

Economic Buyer

The person with budget authority and the power to say yes. Not the champion, not the user, the one who signs.

Red flag: you have never been in a live conversation with this person.

D

Decision Criteria

The formal and informal standards the buyer will judge every option against, technical, financial, and political.

Red flag: you wrote the proposal before asking how they will score it.

D

Decision Process

The steps, stakeholders, and sequence between now and a signed contract, including procurement and legal.

Red flag: your close date moved twice and you still cannot name what is blocking it.

I

Identify Pain

The specific business consequence of staying on the current path. Not a feature gap, a cost, risk, or missed target.

Red flag: the pain you can articulate is the one your product happens to solve.

C

Champion

Someone inside the account with influence who wins personally when you win, and will sell for you when you are not in the room.

Red flag: your champion has never introduced you to anyone else in the org.

How It Compares

MEDDIC is not a replacement for SPIN or Challenger. It is a different layer.

Most sales orgs that run MEDDIC well are also running a questioning method underneath it. Here is where each one earns its place.

MEDDIC

  • Maps the full buying process, not just the conversation
  • Forces explicit economic buyer access
  • Produces a scorable, repeatable forecast signal
  • Does not teach you how to ask better questions

SPIN Selling

  • Best-in-class discovery questioning sequence
  • Surfaces pain through dialogue, not assumption
  • No formal model for multi-stakeholder process
  • No built-in deal scoring or forecast signal

Challenger Sale

  • Strong for reframing thinking in commoditized markets
  • Differentiates you before a feature comparison starts
  • Needs real content investment to execute well
  • Not designed to track deal health over time

Where MEDDIC Gets Misused

Common mistakes that quietly kill deals

Chasing symptoms, not root cause

Fixing a surface complaint will not change the outcome if the underlying business pain is never named.

No confirmed economic buyer

No budget owner in the room means no deal, no matter how excited everyone else sounds.

Skipping the decision process

An unmapped process is an unmapped risk. Get the steps and stakeholders on paper early.

No internal champion

Without someone advocating for you internally, momentum dies the moment you leave the room.
